DIY Halloween Costume ~ Frida Kahlo

October 31, 2013

I wanted to dress up as Frida Kahlo last year, but it didn't happen...
so this year I went out of my way to make sure it happened. I even featured a blog post last year with last minute Halloween costume ideas here and included Frida on my list.

For the costume I wore a maxi skirt that I've had in my closet for years, paired with a Spanish looking top and a floral print scarf. None of these items really go together, but the combination gives it the appropriate Mexican flair.

For my hair, I did a french braid that started at the nape of my neck and worked my way around the crown of my head and pinned the tale of the braid into my hair. I purchased two stems of pink silk flowers from Michaels Arts & Crafts and cut the longer stems off, leaving only about 2 inches per rose. Then I arranged them through the braid at the top of my head.
I finished off the costume with dramatic silver earrings and a few bracelets, plus her signature red lips and eyebrows. I probably could have made my eyebrows closer together creating a true unibrow, but overall I'm pretty happy with the results.

What is your Halloween costume this year?

Recipe ~ Guava Habanero Margaritas

October 30, 2013

Earlier this year we took a trip to Sayulita, Mexico.
Pictures from the trip are here and here, in case you missed it.
We found an amazing little place that instantly became our favorite, Mochi's.
They had the best happy hour, 2 for 1, and their Guava Habanero Margarita was unforgettable. We've finally tried to replicate the drink at home and this was the best recipe we came up with, it's actually very simple.

-Sea salt
-4 key limes
-Kern's guava nectar (2 cans)
-1 Habanero

Serves 4 drinks

1. Cut your key lime in half and wet the rim of your glass with it, then dip the rim in sea salt.
2. Fill your glass with 3-4 cubes of ice.
3. Fill your glass with about half a can of guava nectar.
4. Add your tequila, 1-2 shots, depending on how strong you want it.
5. Squeeze one entire key lime into the drink (make sure you get key limes, not regular limes, you can really taste the difference).
6. Stir it well.
7. Finish it off with a slice of habanero (the spicy kick will get stronger as you get toward the end of your drink).
8. Sip and enjoy!

Muted + Fringe

October 28, 2013

This is one of my favorite sweaters, I love how it's over-sized and the waffle texture only adds to the coziness. I wore this to a Japanese BBQ dinner over the weekend with my boyfriend, it's simple, but the boots really jazz up the outfit.

Happy Monday!

Little Pink Riding Hood

October 25, 2013

It seems that blush pink coats are suddenly all the rage.
I picked up this gorgeous little number a few months ago at Marshalls.
I love how it's over-sized, has comfy pockets and features a hood.
It will work great as a layering piece this Fall.

Happy Friday!

Leopard & Leather

October 23, 2013

I love this long leopard skirt, it was a gift from my sister. It's the perfect print and length, so flowy and romantic too. I paired with my trusty leather jacket since it is finally starting to feel like Fall here in LA.
I love Fall, my favorite things of the season are the colorful leaves, hot chocolate and scarves.

Slacks with a Twist

October 21, 2013

Happy Monday!
I took a little break from blogging last week to focus on my first week of work. My new work environment is pretty casual, so I won't be posting my weekly work wear, but maybe I can dedicate a few posts to outfit ideas for a relaxed office environment.
Let's talk about these pants. I loved them the second I found them on the clearance rack! It's a refreshing take on the typical pair of slacks. I also don't usually like pleats, but these had me rethinking them all together. They are a nice balance of masculine and sexy.
Do you guys have any amazing recent finds?

First Week in LA

October 14, 2013

Our first week in LA in photos... clearly the food has been the biggest hit so far.
The highlights of the week were visiting the Getty Museum, garlic noddles at Gyu-Kaku and living a short drive from the beach.

Mod & Fabulous

October 9, 2013

Our first couple of days in LA have been good to us.
The weather has been perfect, although I'm now sitting at a coffee shop watching the pouring rain outside.
I love the rain, so it still feels perfect to me.

Happy Wednesday!

Giddy Up

October 1, 2013

My obsession with country inspired attire continues this week...
How awesome is this skirt?
I remember my sister had to convince me to get this a few years back when we were at the Free People store on Santana Row. It was way more than I'd normally pay for a skirt, but it's one my favorite pieces in my closet... sometimes she knows me better than I know myself.
